Feeling like I’ve been unproductive is more common than I’d like to admit (though it’s not always the case). Sometimes, I’ve genuinely done nothing aside from stay in bed and watch Netflix all day. Other times, I’ve done a normal amount of work, though less than the day before. At the point in my degree where it’s difficult to justify this unproductivity (have I just invented a new word?), I thought I’d write down a few tips on dealing with it.

Accept it: The first thing you really need to do is to accept that you’re being unproductive. If you can find a way to change that straight off the bat, that’s great. If not, you just need to deal with it. Be aware of exactly why you’re being unproductive. Did you have a tough day the day before? Did you not sleep well? Are you feeling sick? Have you just been super busy recently and today is your first day to take a big breath? Be mindful and accepting.
Make a plan: After you’ve accepted, it’s time to make a plan. Are there any small tasks that you can get done today? Yes? Great. No? Also great. Maybe this is all a sign that you need some real self-care. List out all of the things you need to get done by your next big deadline, but be careful not to fill yourself with anxiety and worry while doing so. Create a list on your phone, your laptop, on paper, or even on a whiteboard/chalkboard. Get your brain thinking. Then allocate specific tasks to each day.
Be realistic: When you’re planning, though, be realistic. You’re probably not going to get that giant paper written all in one day, so split it into 2, 3, or even 4 more manageable chunks. Don’t overwhelm yourself with everything that you were meant to do today on top of tomorrow’s tasks.
Move on: Finally, move on. Don’t dwell on the fact that you weren’t as productive as you’d have liked to be yesterday. Stick to your new plan, but also be flexible. Are you still feeling sick? Take it a little more easy than you might normally do. How do you deal with feeling unproductive? Let me know below.
